Nippers

The Junior Activities, or "nipper" section of the Club averages over 300 members each year making it one of the largest nipper programs in Victoria.  Nipper activities centre around learning surf safety and surf skills in a relaxed and fun environment.  The nationally conducted program caters for kids aged from 7 to 13 years and introduces a surf related theme and qualification at each age level.

Ocean Grove's formal nipper program runs for 6 evenings during summer.  Most of the activities run on the beach and are conducted by qualified instructors.  Water activities are heavily supervised by qualified surf lifesavers at an "in water" ratio of one lifesaver to every five nippers. Nipper competition is an option available for those kids with a competitive spirit and energy to burn.  A number of nipper carnivals are run around the State culminating with the State and National championships.  Ocean Grove has been strongly represented at both State and National competition levels and are the 2004 Victorian champions.  Grove nippers have also represented Victoria in the Junior Surf League and the State Development team.  A club championship event is also conducted each year.

Surf Ed Program – 5.30pm for a 6pm start.   Session will be 6pm – 7.30pm

 Early registration is encouraged as numbers will be capped.

2009/10 Nipper Surf Sport Program 

• The Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club has a proud history of success in junior surf carnivals.

• The Surf Sport program is for those Nippers who wish to train in all aspects Competitive Surf Life Saving events and compete in Junior Surf Life Saving Carnivals.

• Age groups range form Under 8 to Under 14.  (as of October 1)

• The program commenced during Term 3 on Sunday Mornings and during Term 4 and Term 1 runs on Tuesday and Thursday Evenings also. 

• Nippers train in both beach activities and board and surf swim activities. There are both team and individual events.

• Participants are expected to compete in at least 2 general carnivals, the Regional Carnivals and State Carnivals for appropriate age groups.

• Participants gain high level surf and board skills and are required to be competent swimmers ideally involved in pool base training as well as beach training
